Misogyny in India

The aftermaths of the Delhi Gang rape case were many. From the protest at India Gate to water cannon, tear gas and lathi charges by the police, increased vigilance in the capital to the candle light demonstration at Jantar Mantar, but the most amusing of them was to hear what our politicians had to say on the rising number of rape cases in the capital. Well, I am no one to point fingers on them or to question their reasoning because we are the ones who have put them in the position they are in. We had elected them, right? It’s insane to read about their sexist, crude and gender insensitive remarks that they make in public. We hail from a patriarchal society and misogyny is so deeply rooted in our psychology that even our politicians who represent our nation couldn’t refrain themselves from passing lewd comments on their fellow MPs, rape victims etc. Indian psyche is such that we do not respect our women and this is evident below.

So now read on to find out what our honorable ministers have to say as the reason for rape-

Kailash Vijayvargia, Madhya Pradesh Industry Minister
“Ek hi shabd hai – Maryada. Maryada ka ulanghan hota hai, toh Sita-haran ho jata hai. Laxman-rekha har vyakti ki khichi gayi hai. Us Laxman-rekha ko koi bhi par karega, toh Rawan samne baitha hai, woh Sita-haran karke le jayega. (One has to abide by certain moral limits. If you cross this limit you will be punished, just like Sita was abducted by Ravana)

Abhijeet Mukherjee, Congress MP
Those who claim to be students- I can see many beautiful women among them – highly dented-painted- they’re giving interviews on TV, they’ve brought their children to show them the scenes.

Anisur Rehman, CPM Leader
Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister,West Bengal) is decorating her house with rape victims. What would Mamata’s compensation fee if she was a rape victim?

Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister,Delhi
Delhi’s burgeoning population trend is further exacerbated by the continuous and unbridled influx of people from all the country. She also said after the outburst at the rape case that Law and order is not in our hands.

Mohan Bhagwat, RSS Chief
“Rapes happen in India, not Bharat.”

Banwari Lal Singhal, BJP MLA
“Ban skirts as school uniform to reduce harassment of girl students.”

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, BJP spokesperson
“International love guru Shashi Tharoor should get love affairs ministry.”

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Trinamool Congress leader
“If you’re referring to the Park Street rape, see that is a different case altogether that was not at all a rape case. It was a misunderstanding between the two parties involved between a lady and her client. This was not a rape.”

Rajpal Saini, BSP leader
“There is no need to give phones to women and children. It distracts them and is useless. Why do women need phones? My mother, wife and sister never had mobile phones. They survived without one”

Jitender Chhataar, Khap leader
“Poverty and intoxication are the main reasons for rape as well as young people sitting together the wrong way. But also eating chowmein causes a hormonal imbalance which is a big reason for rapes.”

Sube Singh, Panchayat Member
‘I think that girls should be married at the age of 16, so that they have their husbands for their sexual needs, and they don’t need to go elsewhere. This way rapes will not occur’

Dharambir Goyat, Haryana Congress spokesperson
“I don’t feel any hesitation in saying that 90 per cent of the girls want to have sex intentionally but they don’t know that they would be gang raped further as they find some lusty and pervasive people in the way ahead.”

Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Trinamool Congress legislator
“One of the reasons behind the increase in incidents of eve-teasing is short dresses and short skirts worn by women. This in turn instigates young men.”

Botsa Satyanarayana, Andhra Pradesh Congress chief
“Just because India achieved freedom at midnight does not mean that women can venture out after dark”

Sharad Yadav
“Only ‘parkati mahilayen’ would benefit from reservation”

Sriprakash Jaiswal, Union Coal Minister
‘Jaise jaise samay beet-ta hai patni purani hoti jati hai, woh maja nahi reh jata hai.”

Anil Basu, CPM(M) MP
“From which bhatar (Bengali slang for a prostitute’s client) did she get Rs 24 crore to fund the Trinamool Congress’s poll expenses?”
I rest my case.
Cheers!
